Scarlett: Maddie learns a lesson

Scarlett Bowman has revealed how her Hollyoaks character's latest sinister encounter serves as a warning to young girls against the dangers of irresponsible drinking.

Scarlett, who plays feisty Maddie Morrison in the Channel 4 soap, described how her character's beach encounter serves as an example of the vulnerability of some young women.

She described how her character finds herself "on the beach in the sand dunes and no one is really around" after drinking with friends. Maddie is with friend of an old flame Jamie who becomes physical and is determined in his pursuit of Maddie.

The actress described what happens next as "not pretty".

Scarlett, 26, admitted that many young people today are not always aware of what is going on around them when they are drinking and thus can often find themselves in uncomfortable, and sometimes dangerous, situations.

She hopes that next week's Hollyoaks will encourage caution, saying: "You just need to be careful when you drink - drink in moderation, stay with your friends and don't go wandering off on your own."

Despite these traumatic events, the actress said she still enjoyed playing Maddie, explaing that her "loaded" personality meant she is a "great part to play".

Scarlett hinted at further excitement for Maddie - who is currently dealing with her parent's divorce - explaining: "There is a softer side to her, but then she'll just go off in the other direction and she lashes out at people she cares about. She's destructive and there's more of that to come."
