Rose Byrne's Close relationship

Rose Byrne has revealed that her real-life relationship with Glenn Close is nothing like their on-screen one in Damages.

While their alter-egos - ruthless lawyer Patty Hewes (Glenn) and former protege Ellen Parsons - are hellbent on destroying one another, the Australian actress and her American co-star get on like a house on fire.

"We're great friends, and we have such a lot of fun together. She's terrific, so smart with the dialogue. My favourite scenes are always the ones between us," she said.

"She's not a mentor - she's a friend, a colleague and an ally. She doesn't treat me like Patty treats Ellen!"

Rose believes that the complicated relationship between Patty and Ellen keeps viewers hooked on the series, which is approaching its finale with the fifth season.

"It's always the dynamic between Patty and Ellen - that's the essence of the show's popularity," she explains.

"Their history outweighs everything else. Their relationship is what keeps it going. What's great is that their relationship is not about men or nail polish. It's about power. It's not like a glamour magazine - it's a proper, substantial relationship. And I can't think of another female relationship like this on TV," she added.

Despite playing Ellen since the series began in 2007, Rose still researches the role for each season.

"You never want to get complacent and think, 'I know this character because I've done her for four years'. You don't want to rest on your laurels. I approach every season with fresh eyes," she said.
