Edward Norton is to return to The Simpsons.

The Bourne Legacy star is to play a man of the cloth - and Reverend Lovejoy's rival - in an upcoming episode in the 24th season of the hit TV show.

Executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly that Edward will voice "the most lovable minister in the world".

"He is much more popular than Reverend Lovejoy, if you can believe it, and Lovejoy is really upset and becomes a hot tub salesman. It comes down to a battle between the two of them... and there's a surprise at the end," he teased.

Tentatively scheduled to air in spring 2013, the episode titled Pulpit Friction marks Edward's return to the animated comedy. He previously played a con artist in season 12.

Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Zooey Deschanel, Steve Carell and Patton Oswalt are among the celebrity guests making cameos on the 24th season of The Simpsons, which is to start on September 30 in the US.

Edward stars in the fourth instalment of The Bourne series, The Bourne Legacy, alongside Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz, which is out on August 13.
