Home And Away star Jay Laga'aia is to bid farewell to Summer Bay, amid controversy over his departure.

The 48-year-old Samoan actor, who made his debut on the Australian soap in 2010 as good guy Rev Elijah Johnson and returned last March, took to his Twitter to voice his feelings about his upcoming exit.

"As someone who lost his job on H&A because they couldn't write two ethnics that weren't together, I'd like the chance to ply my trade freely," he wrote.

It is thought the 'two ethnics' Jay refers to are his character and Leah (played by Greek Cypriot-born actress Ada Nicodemou), who dated but later split up.

The actor, who has appeared in Star Wars Episode II: Attack Of The Clones and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith, later posted: "I think commercial TV should take a leaf out of children's TV in this country. We are a rainbow nation in kids TV. No tokens here."

Australian broadcaster Channel 7 strongly denied Jay's claim that he was sacked and that Home And Away was racist, insisting that his contract ended because his character's storyline "reached a natural conclusion".

"Jay's comments are offensive. We have great regard for Jay and his work on Home And Away during the last two years," a spokesman told Australia's Herald Sun.

"It is insulting to suggest that Home and Away is racist. His character's storyline reached a natural conclusion," they added.

Details of Elijah's exit storyline are being kept under wraps, but his final scenes are due to air in Australia in April.

Cave Meliisa. I resent your insinuations. The race card is raised here. I addressed it. that is all. Having lived amongst all nationalities all my life, i defy any one not to admit that you are  unaware of another persons skin colour at first. We have had many a laugh with black friends who say that white people appear all the same to them. SmileIt takes a while getting to know a person before you  see the person without the skin colour.

his character  in home and away had come to a natural end on his debut appearance his part was crap and rather than accuse people of racism he should count himself lucky that he had some regular paid work GOODBYE ELIJAH and perhaps the aussies will re introduce prisoner cell block h they will need a soppy preacher

with all the caracters in H&A there are never any couples that live happily ever after. they are either dying or getting seperated. it would be nice if Leah and Irene could have a long term romance with someone. or maybe that annoying character colleen. lol that would be nice.  Elijah is such a nice gentle character. everyone needs a friendly vicar like that.

i always thought he wasnt the correct match for leah perhaps the should have created a romance between him and a character more suited to his age and stature

Australian's are more understanding of the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, yet like the American's with the Indian's alot still has to be done.  To tell you the truth though I have never looked at any of the cast of these TV shows (inclucing UK TV shows) as black or white.  Interesting of those that do!

H&A is no different to most other TV shows in having a predominantly white cast. I expect his storyline did just run its course.

Hmm. Yes.  The australians still do not
do much for Aborigines. At least the Americans
dealt with the Indians decades ago whatever we
say about them. PS, have had advert to the side of my post until now. wonder why????????????????

I have often wondered why there were so very few characters of colour on Home and Away and Neighbours. The token appearances offer weak story lines so you know that they were not in for the long haul. Racist maybe harsh but pretty close!
