Emer Kenny has described the binge-drinking storyline in EastEnders as "relevant".

Lauren Branning (played by Jacqueline Jossa) has been finding comfort in alcohol as a way to deal with her personal troubles, despite the disapproval of her parents Max (Jake Wood) and Tanya (Jo Joyner).

"It's less alcoholism and more binge-drinking is what they are trying to do. That's a very real and relevant teenage story, because it reflects real life," said the actress and writer.

Emer, who formerly played Zsa Zsa Carter, added: "EastEnders can sometimes exist in its own land and I always think it's a good thing when it connects to the real world."

The 22-year-old admitted she doesn't know what the outcome for the plot will be: "I don't see her becoming an alcoholic at 18, but I don't know."

Emer, who wrote a full-length episode of the BBC soap, would love to do more writing for Tiffany Dean (Maisie Smith) and Shirley Carter (Linda Henry).

"I love writing for little Tiff, but I would like to write for Shirley, because my character was her niece and I really love her. But I think it would be daunting because I think Linda is an amazing actress and I would want to do her proud," she said.

She added: "I also enjoy writing for Lauren Branning because Jacqueline is a brilliant actress. She's relateable for me in terms of age so she's a nice person to write for."
