Corrie viewers charmed by Lewis

Coronation Street star Sue Nicholls thinks viewers want to believe Audrey Roberts' man Lewis Archer really has changed for the better.

Retired hairdresser Audrey appears to be in a happy relationship with former conman Lewis, played by Nigel Havers, and Sue told Inside Soap magazine that viewers are rooting for it all to work out.

She said: "They like them as a couple! People know he's a rogue, but he's so charming that they want to believe he's changed, as does Audrey.

"It makes the story more interesting to never really be sure what Lewis is up to - of what he could be planning next."

And Audrey and her family are about to start doubting Lewis again. On their way home from their dream cruise, Audrey is confronted by a former flame of the supposedly reformed conman who claims he ripped her off to the tune of £10,000, just like he tried to do to Audrey.

Penny claims she was engaged to Lewis and warns Audrey to stay away from him.

When Audrey confronts Lewis with Penny in front of daughter Gail Platt and her grandsons, Lewis thinks the game is up. But Audrey's family are horrified as she offers to write Penny a cheque to stop her going to the police.

Sue said: "Audrey is standing by her man. She couldn't bear life without Lewis.

"Penny tries to warn Audrey what Lewis is capable of, but she refuses to listen. Audrey believes in Lewis despite what everyone thinks."
