In fiction, anything is possible. Characters can meet a grisly end, yet be brought back to life. We take a look at several examples of miracle TV resurrections.
Millions of viewers saw Sherlock Holmes, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, apparently die after falling from a building. But in the final shot of second series finale The Reichenbach Fall, the cunning sleuth is revealed to be alive. We'll have to wait until the third series to find out exactly what happened...

Well what can I say!!!! What a superb series finally. Having read all the Sherlock Holmes stories several times over the years I had an idea what might happen - but I had to explain it in detail to my husband as he has never read any of his adventures!
I wish the Beeb would make more. It is the best programme they have made in a long time. Please do not shelve it yet.

Thank you BBC for saving Sherlock's life and for providing us with such a wonderful and entertaining TV series. I love the chemistry between Holmes and Watson and I am eagerly awaiting a new season, but can we have more than 3 episodes, please!

I loved the modern version... well chosen actors, totally gripping story lines based on the original.
Please don't make us wait too long before the next. Although past Sherlock Holmes were ok ... they were never gripping. The writer Arthur Cohnan Doyle would of been proud of the way it was staged, produced and proud of the way they portrayed his book. Now you have given us a thirst to see more ... lets see more.

It couldn't have been Moriarty, as a convincing mask would need a lot of work and time to fit. The faller was definitely alive.
I live in Holland so I can't watch BBC iPlayer to check, but i am pretty sure a lorry was obscuring the landing, we see it pull away as Watson gets up, this may be part of the plan involving Molly. Sherlock said he needed her, but we didn't find out why.
I Loved the (way too short) series. BBC make the best TV in the World.

Cumberbatch and Freeman both excellent as Holmes and Watson.
I hope the 3rd series will be just as good, but, can we have more than 3 episodes please?
(I wasn't too keen on Brett, but a good series nevertheless).

Er,would just like to point out that Sherlock Holmes is resurrected in Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories due to the character's popularity at the time, so anyone who's read the books or seen the Jeremy Brett series will have already known that he fakes his death. However I will be interested to see how they handle this version of events since Watson actually sees him fall in this one, rather than just assuming the worst. I look forward to series 3 and more tales :)

The series was well done but I wish Mark Gatiss would not write episodes as these have been the weak ones. However the Sherlock/Molly interaction in the final episode was a nice touch and, however unlikely, I hope new episodes (series 3) would allow this interaction to continue and develop. Otherwise this is a good modern update of the classic novels and well done on the part of the production team for giving us good entertainment. Well done all!

My theory is that he had an airbag that he inflated just before he hit the ground and the cyclist distracted Dr Watson long enough for that not be apparent. His friend Molly was clearly involved in the cover up maybe another dead body switch or some coma inducing drug and copious amounts of blood. Good stuff though thoroughly enjoyed.

Sherlock is magnificent TV and, along with New Tricks and Doctor Who, it's the best programme for years and years.
Being a fan of the original novels since childhood I know the story this was loosely based on so I was expecting him to put in an appearance at the end, but my wife didn't and she couldn't believe what she was seeing for a time, she sat there open mouthed in shock.
I'm delighted that the third series has all but been confirmed.

Brilliant TV (altho' the Baskerville episode was quite weak silly & predictable) But as the characters interaction kept me and mates watching.
Going to miss it.

I wasthrilled to see lots of you agreed with me.
But in a way I also agree with Scott Lambie in sofar as there is so much rubbish on the TV just lately.
I am sick to the back teeth of 'reality TV' and I didnt like soaps when they were gentle observations on human life, let alone their current unrealistic ratings-chasing garbage.
Sherlock was well made by talented people, to be enjoyed by the masses- everything telly should be.

Moriarty used a sherlock mask to scare the young girl, thats why she screamed when she saw the real Sherlock.
Homes found it on his body, dressed him up, chucked him off...and will stay hidden till the threat goes away.
He wont be the slightest bothered what the public think of him (is he slightly autistic?)
Thats my guess. Cant wait to see if I am on teh right track.

Brill Brill Brill loved it acting great, story gripping , cant wait for the next series. Loved the Jeremy Brett 1980 series so i'm hard to please when it comes to Sherlock holms but wow what can i say guess iv already said it BRILL.. . .

I love the sherlock holmes programme for me it is my only reason for watching tv, i have read the books and they really have done exceptionally well.
