Max Bygraves
The world of showbiz loves a rags to riches story, and Max Bygraves' is one of them. The variety and TV favourite has died at the age of 89. We take a look back at his life in this gallery.
Walter William Bygraves was born 16 October 1922 in south London. One of six children, he was the son of an East End docker who grew up in poverty. However, his talent for singing and entertaining changed his life. He decided on a life in show business, adopting the name 'Max' after his hero, variety legend Max Miller.

I remember his Singalongs too and I think still have an old LP which I used to play when Mum visited me in older years. Sadly Gran and Mum have now passed away. I am glad Max will be joining them and can continue to give them lots of good songs and jokes way up there. RIP Max you were one of the best. Condolences to family and friends.
My brother's friend organised events for 'The Sunshine Homes'. Many years ago he tried to get Wilfred and Mabel Pickles (TV personalities of the day) to open a Fete. They wanted a fee and overnight accommodation in a five star hotel just to open the fete and nothing else. Someone suggested he contact Max Bygraves (big star and much in demand back then). He didn't hold out much hope but got in touch. Max not only came without asking for any fee or expenses but stayed the whole day entertaining the children. No TV, no Press, not for publicity, just out of the kindness of his heart.
R.I.P Max,I remember watching you on tv as a youngster and my parents singing along and laughing with you. As a kid we didnt like to admit we secretly liked you,but it would be nice if some of the so called stars of today were as talented and as versatile as you were. going to join another of the all time greats tommy Cooperi hope you both laugh and sing together. all the best to his family and friends.
i remember him in the 50's 60's and70''s he was fantastic
R.I.P. Max, you were my late mum's favourite. I went to see him once at the london Palladium Nice man.
