Brookside formed part of the 1982 launch night line-up; it became a permanent Channel 4 fixture until it was axed in 2003. In its early years, Brookside was grittier and more socially aware than the likes of Crossroads and Coronation Street.

Created by Grange Hill's Phil Redmond, the soap proved an extraordinary talent factory with Sue Johnston, Ricky Tomlinson, Anna Friel and Jennifer Ellison (pictured with actress Suzanne Collins) all emerging from its cast list. In addition, it propelled Jimmy McGovern, one of TV's most acclaimed dramatists, into the spotlight. Memorable moments include that lesbian kiss, brother and sister incest and the notorious body-under-the-patio storyline.
