A Woman of Substance, based on the book by Barbara Taylor Bradford, starred Jenny Seagrove, Deborah Kerr, Barry Bostwick and Liam Neeson. First broadcast in 1985, it told the story of a determined young woman who builds a retail empire from a small shop. An incredibly successful mini-series, it aired over three nights from 2-4 January and is the highest-rated show ever on Channel 4. The final instalment captivated 13.8 million viewers. It's hard to imagine that figure ever being beaten.
