It's easy to forget cultural phenomenon Big Fat Gypsy Weddings was actually born out of a Cutting Edge episode entitled: My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. Channel 4's documentary strand has been bringing observational documentaries to a wide audience since 1992.

Classic episodes include: The Impossible Job (the programme that helped seal Graham 'do I not like that' Taylor's fate as England coach in the run-up to 1994 World Cup) and the heartbreakingly brilliant, The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off (a frank and moving film about the late Jonny Kennedy, an extraordinary man with a terrible condition.

Honourable mention: Dispatches for some of the most incisive journalism on television.
