Did you notice a slightly awkward atmosphere on The Graham Norton Show this week? We did. And now we know why.

According to a report in The Daily Star, a dispute between Russell Brand, who was on the show to promote new musical Rock Of Ages, and host Graham Norton erupted when Norton brought up Brand's 14-month marriage to pop singer Katy Perry, who had been on the show the previous week.

Norton claimed the issue "just came up". But Brand responded: "It did not come up, mate. You brought it up."

"He upped the stakes and stabbed me in the back," said Brand to fellow guests Emily Blunt and Paloma Faith, according to The Star's report.

The argument, which didn't make the broadcast edit of the show, continued when Brand claimed that Norton had upset his mother.

"My mum is here. She got upset earlier when you dragged up my marriage. I saw her cry," said Brand.

"That's reality because it's real people, Graham, that's my real mum. That's why I was a little bit embarrassed when I saw my mum crying."

"I came here to promote a film and you made my mum cry. I don't see you as that sort of person, Graham."

Norton's response to the upset comedien was simple. He said: "If I had not asked anything it would have been weird because Katy was on the show last week. That's the only reason."
