Silent Witness fans will be sad to hear that Tom Ward is bowing out of the long-running drama later this month. The actor has played hunky forensic pathologist Dr Harry Cunningham since 2002, but he is moving on order to do other projects.

Tom's last appearance will come in an episode revolving around the subject of child sex grooming.

Before then, viewers will see Harry move in with close friend and colleague Dr Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) when a gas explosion in his flat leaves him temporarily homeless.

However, they won't be happy together for very long.

While still aimed at an audience drawn to forensic crime, Silent Witness also appeals thanks to the glimpse into the personal lives of the team, their relationships and the emotional turmoil they often face.

Kate Harwood of BBC Drama praised Tom's contribution to the successful show: "Silent Witness owes a great debt to the talented Tom Ward who has given us our beloved Harry with wit, style and passion for 10 series," she said. "We'll miss him so much and wish him all the best."

In addition to Tom Ward's departure, the BBC has also announced the arrival of actor David Caves in his first TV role as forensic scientist Jack Hodgson. Straight-talking and quick-witted, Jack is one of the youngest forensic scientists in the country.

But as Tom Ward has attracted quite a following as Dr Harry Cunningham over the years, it won't be easy to replace him.
