The Guilty: new ITV drama starring Katherine Kelly
ITV drama The Guilty stars former Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly, now wowing in Mr Selfridge, and Tamsin Greig of Episodes and Friday Night Dinner fame.
Kicking off on Thursday 5 September at 9pm, it's set across the timelines of 2008 and the present. Detective Constable Maggie Brand (Tamsin Greig) investigates the disappearance of little Callum Reid. It's a case she desperately wishes to solve even as it throws up uncomfortable issues as she copes with her own young son’s condition.
Katherine Kelly and Darren Boyd (lately seen in Spy) play the tragic couple living in hope that their son will one day be found. Their lives were torn apart by the events of a horrible weekend five years ago - an awful couple of days that also affected their neighbours.
So far, so Broachurch, right? Well, there are common themes and approaches: the loss of a young boy, the 'everyone's a suspect' staging, the jumps backwards and forwards in time. But The Guilty lacks Broadchurch's depth and subtlety, often relying on dramatic clichés, rote characterisations and hackneyed devices in its storytelling.
The overall effect is a pretty pedestrian crime drama; Tamsin Greig isn't given much to do in the first episode, but she is always worth watching. However, it's the wonderful Katherine Kelly who hoists The Guilty on her shoulders and carries it.
