In Elementary, the mischievous Sherlock Holmes is now running free in New York solving crimes. It's simple deduction that he's going to need someone to keep him grounded.
It will be interesting seeing where the relationship between this Holmes and this Watson will eventually go. It is very different in tone and flavour to the BBC's incarnation; Elementary stands on its own two feet, and not the shoulders of Steven Moffat's Sherlock.

Fact: Lucy Liu is not the first to play a female Watson. There was a made for tv movie/pilot about Holmes being found in suspended animation and woken. In that he is a heroin addict and Watson is the descendant of the original Watson. There was also a hint that Moriarty had frozen himself as well, this was in America as well. An obscure movie perhaps, but not too bad for when it was made on a low budget. What was funny about the show was Holmes' skills being out of date for the 20thcentury, for example when he meets a police chief and believes the name on the cup to be a nickname for him when in fact it was the name of the store he bought it from.
