Wonderful TV, we have enjoyed the series from the start, but there are so many factual discrepancies to be true. For a start the Irish chauffeur is a nonsense, the Irish were only allowed to dig ditches in those days, society was very racist and the Irish bore the brunt of such racism. It would have been unthinkable for a high born lady to have married a servant, let alone sit and fraternise with the lords family. Still, it is hugely entertaining but factually ridiculous.
i have never liked a series better than downton abbey,(with the exeption of when the boat comes in,i found the series very realistic even down to the snobbish behaviour of the staff,my lovely mother rest her soul was born in 1907 and went into what was called service at 12 years of age,she worked right up to the second world war for the same family, and she was in charge, she met my dad in 1940 when she was serving as a trainee nurse, while still working for the same family,my dad a royal naval officer was here in liverpool because his ship was in canada dock getting fixed he was playing football at the local football ground for the royal navy,on finnishing the game in his rush to get back to duty he knocked my mum over after picking her up he took her home the rest is history,BUT STRANGELY ENOUGH,some 33 years later i met my lovely wife at the same football club and offered her a lift home we were hit by another car the rest is history, coincidence i don't know? also my wifes birthday is no 4 mine is no 8 i was born in house no 4 she in no 48 we live in house no 4,as for downton abbey mum used to tell us story's about her life, after marrying she carried on working for the same family until the late fifties but as she said life was more flexable after the war ,she my mum was a hard working lady who worked right up to her seventies god bless her
Looks like Dowton Abbey is just another soap with nothing different. I enjoyed it and bought the DVD's for the first, second and Christmas episodes but I don't think I'll buy the third. It seems to show no imagination or at least very little. Just the same boring soap trash.
