Downton Abbey ended its fourth series pleasantly, rather than dramatically. But anticipation is building for series five and the release of two new images on the official Downton Instagram account will certainly get tongues wagging.

For starters, the series is clearly jumping forward a few years again as the pictures of George - the son of Lady Mary (played by Michelle Dockery) and the late Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) - and Sybbie, the daughter of Tom Branson (Allen Leech) and Lady Sybil (Jessica Brown Findlay) – illustrate.

Alongside the photos, was the following message: “The dear children of #Downton Abbey are growing up. We are most delighted to introduce Oliver and Zac Barker who will play Master George Crawley in the upcoming new series. Wonderful! #DowntonAbbey #Children #Series5”

The photo of Sybbie Branson was accompanied by a similar post, albeit with a small alteration listing the name of young actress Fifi Hart.

When last we saw the popular ITV drama, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) was being courted by two suitors: the dashing Lord Gillingham (Tom Cullen) and the rather reserved Charles Blake (Julian Ovenden).

In terms of telling them apart, it didn’t help that both men were similar in looks (not-very-tall and dark-haired), but perhaps Lady Mary’s moving as far away from her beloved blond Matthew Crawley (actor Dan Stevens) as possible.

She certainly will never forget him every time she looks at her young son...
