Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat said it felt "like a miracle" when he saw the show's new star Jenna-Louise Coleman audition with Matt Smith.

The former Emmerdale actress is seen here in the first photo released of the Time Lord and his new assistant.

Previously, Jenna-Louise played lesbian Jasmine Thomas in the ITV1 Yorkshire soap. More recently she featured in the commercial broadcaster's flop big-budget drama Titanic (as perky stewardess Annie Desmond).

Steven Moffat has remained tight-lipped about the new series of Doctor Who, saying Jenna-Louise's introduction would not be "the usual story". He revealed: "It's a very, very different way for the Doctor to meet his new friend."

Actress Karen Gillan, who currently plays current sidekick Amy Pond, will be written out in the fifth episode of 2012 in a "final encounter" with the weeping angels.

Fans will see six episodes this year, with eight more in 2013. Jenna-Louise Coleman makes her first appearance in the Christmas Day special.
