The Doctor is the last of the Time Lords - a race of two-hearted humanoids from the planet Gallifrey who travel through time and space observing other races. The Doctor however has never quite managed to adhere to his peoples' strict code of non-interference and has saved the human race from alien threats many, many times.
Travelling in a stolen time machine, the unmistakeable blue police box known as the TARDIS, the Doctor is able to regenerate when dying, allowing him to live on in a new form (and the show's producers replace an outgoing actor with a new face). Matt Smith is the 11th incarnation of the Time Lord.
