Dame Maggie Smith to leave Downton Abbey?
According to reports, the actress has told Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes, that she will quit the show after the third series.

Reports suggest that Dame Maggie Smith is set to leave Downton Abbey.
She plays one of the most popular characters to inhabit Downton Abbey, but Dame Maggie Smith has reportedly said that the third series of the ITV drama will be her last.
The Daily Mail reported that a source told them that the actress has asked to be written out of the show, in hope of chasing other acting roles.
The source told the Daily Mail: "She is keen to pursue other roles so Julian is preparing to write her out. He [Fellowes] always has several endings so it won't be too difficult for him, but losing Maggie will be a great loss."
We don't know about you, but we'll know that we'll miss Dame Maggie's character, the witty Dowager Countess, if she left the show - we can't get enough of her catty one-liners!
Reports of Dame Maggie leaving the show follow an earlier announcement by executive producer Rebecca Eaton, who confirmed that character who is "pretty key in the cast" is set to die...
Finger's crossed that it isn't the Dowager Countess!

it will be a great loss if DAME MAGGIE leaves downton abbey, i for one will be among those millions who watch the show that will miss the dowager countess .

A very great shame if true. She IS one of the mainstays of the program! Downton would be a dull place without her!

She makes the programme, and will be greatly missed. She is brilliant, but having read this weekend that Rebecca Eaton said she was difficult to work with, I'm not surprised. Support like that for doing a fabulous job is not needed. Perhaps Ms Eaton should consider her future?

She makes it for me . The writing is superb but she delivers those lines like no one else can.
Mind you if he gets her 'sister' in the form of Judi Dench that would be brill. I loved them in The best exotic marigold hotel.

What a shame that Dame Maggie Smith has decided to quit Downton Abbey, she is such an amazing actress and has a brilliant sense of humour with her quick remarks, she is brilliant, and I shall miss seeing her. I love Downton, but I guess if she wants to move on, it is her choice.

Maggie Smith is amazing in Downton - I just love the one liners but there again she amazing in everything she does. My first experience of her was in the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and she is still amazing today. If she wants to go to pursue other roles she will be missed but good luck to her

Downton Abbey will not be the same without Dame Maggie Smith in it she has some cracking one liners and she always delivers them so well with her expressens on her face butter wouldnt melt. She is a wonderful actress in all she does, good luck in all you do in the future Maggie Sonia Durrant

How can you replace a "Diamond"? To lose Maggie Smith from what has proved a superb series like Downton Abbey has on its own merit has proved to be - is like take away the foundation stone,. Thank you Maggie for bringing such a wonderful character to our screens, I have read the book of Downton Abbey and somehow cant imagine the real Dowager there to be anyone else, but our Maggie as she protrays her. Well Done Maggie and thank you for many happy hours enjoyment. You are a "True Star" in the whole meaning of the word. God bless.
