It was a night of strange song choices and stand out performances on tonight's X Factor. In head judge Gary Barlow's eyes, it was James Arthur who stood head and shoulders above the rest. “This wasn’t the performance of the night, it was the performance of the series so far!”

The 24-year-old sang his version of LMFAO's I'm Sexy And I Know It and the judges were in awe. Louis commended his ability to make any song his own: “You’re going to get a recording deal.”

Ella Henderson raised the roof with her rendition of You Got The Love by Candy Staton. The show had a club classics theme this week so the youngster chose to show off her dance skills, Gary wasn't impressed.  “The dance moves really cheapened the performance for me. You have an amazing talent and an awesome voice, you don't need to do that.”

Nicole Scherzinger disagreed: “Your dancing was effortless and you made it yours. I just can't critique you, you’re beyond your years.”

Jade Ellis could be in trouble. While her version of Free by Ultranate could have raised the roof, it fell flat due to an ongoing illness. The single mum has struggled this week and has been forced to have her vocal chords examined by a specialist, but she still battled on.

The judges tried to build her confidence, but Louis Walsh was less forgiving: “There was no energy. It wasn’t enough.”

And finally, there was Rylan Clark. Rylan may have shaved his trademark beard and half of his head but there was no change when it came to vocals.

Much as Rylan's mash-up was fun (and the bum wiggle a classic), his range let him down. He pretty much talked his way through Jennifer Lopez’s Get On The Floor while his performance of Rihanna’s Please Don’t Stop The Music was good karaoke at best.

As always it didn't seem to matter. Rylan entertained in yet another unusual outfit, dismissed Gary Barlow's negativity with a 'talk to the hand gesture' and thanked his fans for all their support. He even managed to squeeze in apology for his drunken behaviour! Will he survive another week?
