The Apprentice

All the latest news and gossip from The Apprentice...

By SelenaLedgerton 08/05/2013 17:42
It became more than clear after last night's Apprentice that we're in for some giggles, guffs and guffaws with this lot!

Tonight Lord Sugar's candidates prove beyond all doubt that they are anything but 'the business elite'. When asked to create their own flavoured beer, they fail to add a set amount of flavouring (THAT'S WRITTEN DOWN!) to a sample keg. It's laughable.

It's also criminal that they show no remorse whatsoever for this total waste of booze!

Karren Brady has been dreading Show 2: "The worst situation I have ever seen comes in the second episode. It's the worst situation not just in the episode, but in my life."

Either she's being over dramatic or it all goes downhill from here!

One of the most annoying candidates in history turned it around...

By SelenaLedgerton 03/06/2012 22:32

Ricky Martin has been hired as Lord Sugar's Apprentice. The recruitment manager beat wine investor Tom Gearing, business development manager Jade Nash and technology entrepreneur Nick Holzherr to claim Lord Sugar's £250,000 investment.

He may have been professional wrestler in his time and yes, he has a showbiz name and claims (annoyingly) to be the 'reflection of perfection' but the 26-year-old beat the odds and impressed the experts to come out on top.

After winning, Ricky beamed: "Lord Sugar and I are going to be a powerful force to reckon with. I can’t say I’ve digested it yet."

"I’m ecstatic. I'm in genuine shock, I’m so so pleased. Tom is incredible at what he does, great competition but I believed in myself, I thought I always I had it in me and I proved it."

As always, Lord Sugar was joined by a panel of experts throughout the interview process. Business troubleshooter Claude Littner delivered his killer questions. Magazine entrepreneur Mike Soutar told it like it was. Chief executive Matthew Riley exposed some hidden truths and infamous business battleaxe Margaret Mountford gave the candidates a grilling.

Ricky took the knock from Lord Sugar's business associates. He was hammered repeatedly for his 'arrogant and foolish' personal statement in which he compared himself to demigod Thor and referred to Lord Sugar as an 'old dog' to whom he'd teach new tricks.

Fortunately the experts were impressed by Ricky's business plan for a recruitment agency specialising in science and technology. Business guru Claude Littner gushed about the former pro-wrestler stating that his plan was well thought out and an interesting concept. He also admired how the show had humbled Martin.

Ricky said, "When I arrived it was all about the bravado and I said these things to be noticed. I turned up as a showman but as the show went on, I developed as a businessman. I'm not that person anymore."

On The Apprentice: You're Hired Lord Sugar spoke about his decision: "When it starts you know which ones annoy you a bit and Ricky's a classic example. He came in like a bull in a china shop and then grew as time went on."

Sugar added that he wanted to go with a business model that was safe and well thought out. Runner-up Tom Gearing's plan required additional outside investment and that was a risk. Lord Sugar 'has never worked with other people's money' and he didn't intend on starting now.

Salesman yes, shrewd... no.

By SelenaLedgerton 30/05/2012 22:21

Adam Corbally is the next candidate to be fired from The Apprentice. Lord Sugar ousted the show favourite after he failed to lead during the latest 'affordable luxury' task. The business tycoon gave Corbally the role of project manager but fellow candidate Jade Nash overshadowed him as a walking talking one woman show - every idea was hers.

(C) BBC

This week the candidates were asked to consider affordable luxury retail markets and come up with a new product range. Adam headed Sterling and they opted for chocolates while Phoenix chose a male grooming range.

(C) BBC
While Adam headed off with Nick Holzherr to a chocolatier, Jade spent her time on the phone brainstorming and manufacturing chocolates. Both Nick and Adam failed to speak to the owner of the shop about his business model and instead spent their time eating all the sweets - epic fail.

The pair travelled back to create a brand for their range but quickly took to the phone to ask Jade for product ideas, names and marketing strategies... need I say more.

(C) BBC
In the boardroom both men turned on Jade stating that she may have come up with the ideas but they can't have been that good as they still failed the task. Phoenix may have won with the more professional business model but Jade proved her worth and she had no intention on going quietly: "If I'm the one who should go then why would you both go with all of my ideas in this task? If you're such leaders in business then why didn't you say, 'let's do this'."

Lord Sugar had heard enough: "Adam, You have impressed me and you've thrown yourself into everything head first. Your agression, your ambition and enthusiasm are fantastic... and you're a good salesman also. However there are other areas I have to consider, your shrewdness, the awareness, the getting the plot, they are lacking..."

"So after much deliberation and this is a hard decision I have to make... You're fired!"

Adam was humble in defeat. "Thank you for the opportunity Lord Sugar, if you ever need a salesman then you know where I am."

Do you think the right candidate left?

Will you miss Adam in the final?

Class for less cash... is it possible?

By SelenaLedgerton 30/05/2012 09:25

This week Lord Sugar calls the teams to Burlington Arcade, a luxury shopping centre in London's West End. He explains that even in hard times Britain still has a taste for the finer things in life, the problem is that they need to be affordable.

The candidates' latest task is to consider affordable luxury retail markets and come up with a new product range.

(C) BBC

Both teams take their market research seriously but while one trains in male grooming, the other neglects the business side of confectionary and concentrates on troughing on chocolates - not the best plan!

As the products take shape and decisions are made, it's time for the design and branding. One candidate comes to the rescue when a brainstorming session comes up with nothing and the race is on to prepare their presentations.

(C) BBC

Things go from bad to worse when the teams create a prototype retail space and pitch their ideas to an expert panel. One product wows the business boffins while the other falls flat but (thanks to their combined failures) both teams face a grilling.

Who will make it through to Sunday's grand final and who will hear those immortal words, 'You're fired!'

It's confirmed... the business tycoon can't stand pompous celebs

By SelenaLedgerton 28/05/2012 21:48

Alan Sugar has previously hosted Comic Relief and Sport Relief versions of Celebrity Apprentice, but last night he insisted that he has no plans to 'do a Donald Trump' and run them annually.

Speaking at last night's BAFTAs, Sugar said: "Celebrity Apprentice was a good idea at a time, and the Americans nicked it and (only the Americans could say this) they no longer do a 'civilian' version."

(C) PA Images

"I personally declined doing any more of the celebrity ones, I'm not sure we were even asked to do any more. They are a bit difficult to deal with some of these people and the format relies on having the celebs at your disposal for a week. The celebs are very busy, and it's difficult to sort it out."

Young Apprentice won a BAFTA for 'Reality And Constructed Factual' last night and although he confirmed that another teen series was on the way, Sugar gave nothing away about his 2012 grown ups.

"Over the years I have learned that your initial instincts normally change over a while because people grow with the process and whereas you may favour an individual, some start to want it and some start to shine through and we've seen that a number of times."

So you're not telling us who wins then Al? Boooo!

Would you watch Celebrity Apprentice? I would! It'd make a change from tolerating these cliché spouting no hopers... or would it?

It's a shock result as Lord Sugar shows two candidates the door

By SelenaLedgerton 23/05/2012 22:35

It's a rarity on The Apprentice but tonight Lord Sugar fired TWO of his candidates after both performed poorly. Project manager Stephen Brady and Gabrielle Omar failed to sell enough 'discount deals' and refused to listen to their team-mate's advice.

(C) BBC

This week the teams represented a daily deals website that offered online coupons and exclusive deals. Phoenix and Sterling had to prove their negotiation skills, choose the right products and services, create their offers and get a cracking discount - all before 7pm.

The teams waded their way through beauty treatments, hotel stays and restaurants to try and find something appealing. They pitched the website to numerous companies in the hope that they'd offer them a cut-price high-class deal to sell.

While Phoenix went for quality over quantity, Sterling was all about the numbers. Project manager Stephen refused to take Ricky Martin's advice and try a health spa as he was convinced that one large order from a restaurant would suffice. Big mistake!

Jade's team offered both spa and restaurant deals which resulted in a landslide victory.

THE RESULT:

Sterling: £6440
Phoenix: £14500!!

Ricky landed them over £6000 in restaurant meal deals and that was all down to his pitch. He could have made more if he'd gone for two hundred plates rather than one but sales are sales and he'd have flown if he'd have tried the spa.

(C) BBC

Gabrielle failed to impress in the boardroom as her sales were minimal (from a golf experience) and as usual she'd done little else. Fired!

(C) BBC

Last week Steve insisted that he could win as project manager but Lord Sugar was left wanting and he was fired shortly after as he'd failed miserably and ignored the suggestion of spa sales. Frankly I couldn't be happier!

Who'll bag the most desirable online offers?

By SelenaLedgerton 21/05/2012 22:02

This week the candidates are called to meet Lord Sugar on a rooftop overlooking the City of London.
Here, countless financial deals are done on a daily basis and the business tycoon informs the teams that for one day only, they'll be negotiating their way to a pretty penny. As long as they know what the public wants!

Simply put, the teams will be representing a daily deals website that offers online coupons and exclusive deals. There's everything on offer from hotel stays to beauty treatments and it's up to Phoenix and Sterling to prove their negotiation skills, choose the right products and services, create their offers and get a cracking discount. They have till 7pm.

Remember, this is The Apprentice and as usual the 'business elite' prove that they would rather bicker with each other and whinge like little children than actually succeed. Aides Nick and Karren shake their heads in unison at the sheer desperation of some of the candidates, although some have the right idea - teeth whitening and fish pedicures are very popular.

Time ticks away and as the teams try to slash prices and create desirable deals, tempers fray! It's a photo finish as the candidates speed across town to the website's HQ, only the offers that meet the website's high standards will be approved and go live for twenty four hours.

Who will come out on top and who will face Lord Sugar's firing finger of fate?

Wine Task: This was all about the bubbles and they blew it!

By SelenaLedgerton 16/05/2012 22:45

Jenna Whittingham is the next candidate to be fired on The Apprentice. The teams were asked to promote British sparkling wine, raise awareness of it's quality and take on the likes of prosecco and champagne - to say they missed the point is an understatement!

(C) BBC

Lord Sugar asked Phoenix and Sterling to create a brand and website for their English sparkling wines. They also had to create a video ad for their homepage and pitch their campaign to a panel of wine buffs.

The teams started well and both seemed to be on track with classy branding that would give champers a run for it's money. Unfortunately from that point on, it was all downhill and while project manager Tom did all the tasting, his team fell flat with an ad from Snoresville.

Ricky Martin led Sterling and thought he had it nailed. He popped during the pitch and impressed the panel but sadly Jenna and Steven's cheesy ad smeared the classy image they'd created and the experts were not impressed!

In all honesty both teams completely missed the point. The idea was to raise awareness of the quality of English wine, point out that it was award winning and pit it (on quality) against champagne - something ignored by both teams.

THE RESULT:

The wine experts believed that Sterling's pitch was good to start but unfortunately they lost it completely with the video.

Phoenix forgot to raise awareness but managed to create a website that reflected the brand - they won.

Ricky, Jenna and Steven returned to the boardroom. Ricky fought his corner as he'd said 'no cheesy ads' so Jenna was forced to take it on the chin. "I went with this ad, I took a risk and it's not gone down well. I'll admit it. I made a silly mistake, I'm hoping to learn from it and it won't happen again."

The candidates stepped out while the aides gave their view:

Nick Hewer on Jenna: "She's a good sport who tries terribly hard."

Karren Brady on Steven: "He's very articulate in this boardroom but if he's that clever and he sees Jenna making a terrible advert, what's to stop him stepping in."

Lord Sugar was the first to say that Steven could talk the talk in the boardroom but failed to speak up during the tasks. He agreed that Ricky was partly to blame as he suggested adding 'a little humour' to the ad which was totally inappropriate.

That said, his mind was made up. "Jenna, you've been in the losing team five times and in the bottom three twice. You didn't realise that this was a high quality product and you should not have been making a humerous video in the first place. In my opinion that was the problem with this task. I'm sending you home, you're fired!"

Taxi for Jenna! "I'm going to do it on my own. I want him to see that he did make a mistake firing me."

At least we don't have to listen to her voice anymore :)
